Where it all began

From Oil Burners to Complete Indoor Comfort

State Automatic’s story follows the evolution of home comfort itself—from coal stokers and oil lamps to today’s advanced heating, cooling, and indoor-air systems.

    A New Company

Leslie Frantz and Ken Swinford formed State Oil Burner Co. after Les developed a strong local customer base.

  2. 1937

    A New Name

The business became State Automatic Heating & Cooling Corp. as its services continued to grow.

  3. 1944

    Family Leadership

Les purchased his partner’s interest and continued building the company with help from his family.

  4. Today

    Four Generations

The family team and long-serving employees carry the company’s original service values forward.

A true family business

Built by People Who Stay and Care

Gary Frantz joined the business in 1966 after helping his father around the shop as a teenager. James Gates brought new-construction HVAC experience to the team in 1990, and additional members of the Frantz and Gates families joined over the years.

By 2007, the fourth generation was involved. Alongside the family are employees whose decades of service reflect the same stability, knowledge, and commitment.

Our strongest recommendation: Today, the majority of State Automatic’s business comes from referrals—a sign of the trust built one customer at a time.

First Generation

Leslie Frantz established a culture of practical knowledge and personal service.

Second Generation

Gary Frantz helped lead the company while keeping its family character intact.

Third Generation

James Gates joins Gary in leading and growing the Company. Jim’s brothers Bob, Mike and his father Robert (Pops) also joined the team, along with Gary’s daughter, Kathy in the Office. Dave, Jose and Annie have been with us over 20 years.

Fourth Generation

A new generation, lead by James Gates’ sons, Jim and Josh now help carry the family’s service legacy into the future. John and Tim also enhance the team with their expertise.
